UW experts reflect on Harvard lawsuit, cite threat to academic freedom

Harvard University sued President Donald Trump’s administration after a series of contentious exchanges in April in which the federal government demanded unprecedented oversight of the private institution’s operations due to concerns of antisemitism on Harvard’s campus and, when met with resistance, froze large portions of its federal funding.

The conflict between the federal government and Harvard may have triggered a “seismic shift” in the way the world understands the relationship between th...

Harvard versus Trump administration: A timeline of the federal oversight dispute

Following contentious protests on college campuses across the country in 2024, President Donald Trump announced the formation of the Federal Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism in February 2025 with the primary goal of evaluating universities potentially engaging in or enabling antisemitic behavior.

After conducting investigations on many university campuses, the federal government’s task force sent letters to many major private universities — including Harvard University, Columbia University, C...

UW third-year student named 2025 recipient of Cesar Cauce Memorial Scholarship

UW third-year student Noah Kaloeaholokai Lum recently received the Cesar Cauce Memorial Scholarship, an annual scholarship instituted by UW President Ana Mari Cauce in honor of her brother, Cesar Cauce, who passed away after being shot by a member of the Ku Klux Klan in the Greensboro Massacre of 1979.

Cauce noted that it was important for her to create this scholarship to keep her brother’s memory alive in a way that would have mattered to him.

“I sometimes wonder what my brother would be doi...

The ripple effect: New student marketplace makes waves throughout UW community

Ripple, UW’s first online marketplace, officially became available for download on the App Store in April. Since then, the app has been downloaded over 600 times, accumulated close to 400 active users, and facilitated thousands of dollars worth of sales between UW students.

Founded by a team of UW students, Ripple exclusively serves the UW community — requiring a UW email address for access — thus increasing security, personability, and convenience for students engaging in online selling, said...

UW alum bridges Seattle’s past and present as the 2025 University Bridge artist-in-residence

When I moved into my new off-campus apartment this year, I was thrilled to find that my bedroom window had a breathtaking view of University Bridge and Portage Bay. Over the last few weeks, I have often found myself pausing to watch the cars glide across the bridge and the boats pass beneath it. Something about this scene kept drawing me in. I never imagined that just a few weeks later, I’d be sitting inside the bridge tower itself, speaking with someone even more entranced by the bridge than I...

From rolling dough to rolling in dough: two UW grads bake up success with TOASTED.

When transfer students Murat Akyuz and Jaafar Altameemi stepped into their first UW class in September 2021, they knew they were entering a new chapter at a new school, but they could never have imagined that one class would change their entire lives.

Akyuz and Altameemi opened the doors to their U-District bagel café, TOASTED. Bagels & Coffee, in July 2024, one year after graduating from UW. TOASTED. puts a Mediterranean twist on the classic bagels-and-coffee experience, pairing a unique menu...

First Nations @ UW Hosts 54th Annual Spring Powwow

Alaska Airlines Arena was completely transformed into a cultural paradise full of Indigenous voices, spirits, and blessings to celebrate the 54th Annual Spring Powwow hosted by First Nations @ UW.

The energy was electric.

People from all over the country gathered in one place just to meet each other, check up on one another, dance together, and eat together. Hyperactive toddlers tried their best to emulate their parents’ fluid dancing out on the arena floor. Elders expressed their years of wis...

Filipino American Student Association hosts 30th annual FilNight, reflects on legacy of late member Steven Santos

Kane Hall is one of the ugliest buildings on the UW campus. At this point, I hope most people agree that the lecture halls are home to some of the most annoying classes and the outside is a brutalist monstrosity on one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. So, as if going there four times a week wasn’t enough already, when I learned that my next event piece for The Daily was in Kane, I was not happy — until the event began.

UW’s Filipino American Student Association (FASA) recently hos...

A journey home through music: Surasik and UW Yuva Raga co-host ‘Yatra’ concert

School isn’t out yet but the air is starting to feel like summer break and my mind tells me it's time to go home but, like everyone else, I am stuck here till finals week. I miss home and freedom.

So, imagine my unfiltered joy when I stepped into last week’s Indian classical concert, performed by Tabla Master Amit Kavthekar and iconic Sitarist Ravi Chary, and immediately felt a taste of home at school. My family has never consistently played classical music at home but something about the sound...

The trailer is dead. The film edit is here.

Editor's note: “Watch Dawg” is a weekly column exploring the wide, glitzy world of the entertainment industry. From films and television to award shows and scandals, “Watch Dawg” will discuss it all.

I have always described the feeling of watching a movie like being on a rollercoaster. The film will take the viewer through an incredible journey of emotional variation and by the end of it, one is really just left reflecting on their life choices. I always thought this experience was limited to f...

Review: ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie’

People love to tell me that cartoons are dead — dumb, stupid, tasteless, unnecessary, and outdated. I always tell those people to shut up, sit down, put on some cartoons, and have fun. In that spirit, I went into this movie thinking it was going to be the one to prove everyone wrong. It was going to show me cartoons are still alive.

I wish it had met those expectations.

“The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” just didn’t do anything special for me. It didn’t move the needle on the so...

Review: ‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’

Loving movies is not always easy. My dedication to film is often tested by the universe. When I got invited to a free screening of “The Ballad of Wallis Island” all the way in Lynnwood, I knew the film gods were evaluating my commitment and I refused to give in. As I was sitting for an hour and a half on three buses and the light rail to get to the movie theater, I was just praying it was going to be worth it.

It was like 70% worth it.

“The Ballad of Wallis Island” follows famous musician, Her...

Review: ‘G20’

Making a great action movie is, in my opinion, the toughest accomplishment in all of film. A filmmaker has to achieve a perfect balance between the pure entertainment quality of the film, in terms of plot, action choreography, etc., while also maintaining a powerful emotional undertone that helps viewers stay tethered to a story that, for the most part, is completely unrealistic.

Films like “The Fast and the Furious,” “Gladiator,” and “Léon: The Professional” are all bona fide classics of the g...
